The Oak

Client Z&L Properties Inc.
Location San Francisco, CA
Status Under Construction

The Oak's flowing facade was designed in response to the historic typology and texture along the Market Street corridor.

The Oak transforms an infill plot in The Hub into two 12-story towers with 109 residences and a shared courtyard. The towers are connected by an enclosed glass pedestrian sky bridge with east and west views of downtown San Francisco and Twin Peaks.

The exterior façade undulates as the facade recesses on various floors, creating spatial relief and activating the street wall with private balconies. The objective was to create shade and shadow with depth and relief rather than applying fenestration to the façade. The overall rhythm, texture and undulation of the exterior wall was developed as a response to the neighboring historic typology and texture along the Market Street corridor.

Using the building structural slabs, the exterior texture of the project is a composite of glass and metal window wall, which spans floor to ceiling. At street level, the undulation of the storefronts creates pockets for the retail, maximizing the amount of street frontage and creating more space for pedestrian activity.

The rooftop has a common planted terrace with expansive views of the city, including City Hall and neighboring Hayes Valley.
