Handel Architects is an award-winning, full-service architecture, planning and interiors firm dedicated to bringing design excellence to urban environments throughout the world. Our four offices are located in San Francisco, New York, Boston and Hong Kong.

Our San Francisco studio is in search of a Project Architect with 10+ years of experience who will become an integral player in our work environment and our firm’s vision. You will work closely with the firm’s leadership team on one or more projects, leading design teams from feasibility and concept design through documentation and construction administration. You will have the opportunity to work closely with our clients throughout all phases of design. As a lead team member, you will need to be flexible, open-minded, and willing to work on concurrent projects. Our practice encourages open design dialogue and participation among all our team members to create a fluid and collaborative environment.


  • 10+ years of experience with all phases of architectural and interiors projects; large scale multi-family, hospitality and/or mixed-use experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success completing one or more buildings as a project architect
  • Professional degree in architecture
  • License required; California license preferred
  • Experience executing and coordinating the architect’s responsibilities under a contract
  • Understands basic risk management strategies, including protection of both the firm and the client
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience reporting to a project manager, and with their guidance, directing a team of architects, designers, and consultants on a day-to-day basis
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team, both in-house and out-of-house
  • Demonstrated success with making difficult decisions, especially in the presence of incomplete information or conflicting interests
  • Strong organizational and technical capability, including demonstrated experience with preparing, coordinating, and issuing drawing and specification submissions
  • Experience with zoning and building codes, and entitlement and permit approvals. Experience with San Francisco or other California jurisdictions preferred.
  • Revit advanced or expert level experience
  • Graphic layout experience preferred (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • 3D modeling and rendering experience preferred (Rhino, Grasshopper, Sketchup, VRay


  • Serve as a client contract; maintain a positive and professional relationship with the client for the duration of the project
  • Recognize when contract scope has changed or been exceeded, and work with the project manager to develop solutions and correct such situations
  • Assist the client with reviewing their budget, schedule, and other project goals. Assist the project manager with communicating these goals to the full team, and be responsibile for their implementation over the full duration of the project.
  • Lead the full team through all phases to project completion
  • Serve as a mentor for your team members, and potentially others in the office
  • Research, promote and implement new building systems
  • Participate in firm management and leadership activities, such as staffing resource allocation, performance reviews, and membership in professional and/or community organizations
