Fellowship Description

The Handel Architects Sustainability Fellowship is an exciting opportunity for candidates with a passion for sustainable design, research, and innovation. This full-time summer internship seeks to promote sustainable design work and expand the adoption of sustainable design strategies within our practice. The individual will work directly with our Director of Sustainable Design and the firm’s Sustainability Group, collaborating on innovative architectural projects and conducting research on specific topics related to sustainable design strategies for high-rise buildings.

At the end of the program the Fellow will compile a report/presentation describing the accomplishments of the Fellowship and present them to the firm.


Fellowship is open to applicants currently enrolled in an accredited degree program in Architecture and/or Sustainable Development. Applicants must demonstrate their focus in Sustainable Design through course work in design studios, seminars, or research projects.


A jury composed of leading design professionals will be responsible for selecting the applicant. Jury members include:

- Louis Koehl AIA, CPHD, Director of Sustainable Design, Handel Architects

Cash Prize

$1,000 cash prize and paid summer internship.

Application Requirements

All proposals should be 8.5” x 11” page size, 15 pages maximum.

1. Project sample

Showcase a project that you designed that utilizes sustainable technologies / design practices or explores sustainability concepts.

Project sample should include a short description (max. 150 words) and graphics that address the sustainability concepts and strategies being implemented / explored.

2. Proposal / Personal statement (max. 500 words)

What drives your interest/focus on sustainability?

What topic(s) of sustainable/regenerative architecture most interest you?

What would your unique perspective or skill set do you bring to this opportunity?

4. Recommendation letter from an advisor or educator within your program.

Virtual interviews will be arranged for finalists.


March 1st, 2023 - Deadline for submissions

March 15th, 2023 - Candidate interviews

March 24th, 2023 - Announcement of award

Recipients of the Handel Architects Sustainability Fellowship will receive specific rules governing ownership and use of the work product generated under the grant (the “Materials”). These rules will set forth the respective rights of prize recipients, Handel Architects, and the public to use the Materials.

The Handel Architects Sustainability Fellowship is not open to any current or former employees of Handel Architects.
