FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION

The Handel Architects Sustainability Fellowship seeks to promote sustainable design by sponsoring a full-time summer intern who will further the integration of sustainable design standards into our practice. The individual will work with the firm’s Sustainability Group, collaborating on ongoing projects/presentations within the firm. In addition, he or she will conduct research on specific topics related to sustainable architecture. Research topics could include:

  • Passive House design and why it is a suitable standard for large scale multi-family projects.
  • Innovative sustainability strategies for high-rise buildings and the future of zero-waste, zero-emissions cities.
  • Different sustainable rating systems and certification programs.
  • Ways to improve written specifications so as to better integrate sustainable measures.
  • Obtain current data on the new “green” products and improve the office product sample library.

Throughout the program the Fellow will present their work in Sustainability Group meetings and office-wide presentations.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Shows strong interest in sustainability and/or material science as it relates to the built environment.
  • Is familiar with sustainable design methodologies and processes.
  • Has excellent written, visual and oral communication skills.

ELIGIBILITY

Fellowship is open to applicants currently enrolled in an accredited degree program in Architecture with a focus in Sustainability, demonstrated through course work in design studios, seminars, or research projects.

JURY

A jury composed of leading design professionals will be responsible for selecting the applicant. Jury members include (list is in progress):

  • Gary Handel FAIA, Managing Partner, Handel Architects
  • Deborah Moelis AIA, CPHD, Principal, Handel Architects

CASH PRIZE

In addition to a paid summer intern position in the New York City office of Handel Architects, the selected applicant will receive a cash prize of $1,000.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

All proposals should be 8.5” x 11” page size, 15 pages maximum.

1. Project sample

Showcase a project that you designed that utilizes sustainable technologies / design practices, or explores sustainability concepts.

Project sample should include a short description (max. 150 words) and graphics that address the sustainability concepts and strategies being implemented / explored.

2. Proposal / Personal statement (max. 500 words)

What is your motivation to join us?

Research Project Proposal - Select a topic from the Fellowship Description and propose how your time at Handel Architects would allow for the development of the topic. Or, propose a new topic and describe how it might be implemented.

4. Recommendation letter from an advisor or educator within your program.

Recipients of the Handel Architects Sustainability Fellowship will receive specific rules governing ownership and use of the work product generated under the grant (the “Materials”). These rules will set forth the respective rights of prize recipients, Handel Architects, and the public to use the Materials.

The Handel Architects Sustainability Fellowship is not open to any current or former employees of Handel Architects.
