Associate Principal
Matt Berglund is an Associate Principal with 18 years of experience and has led several prominent projects in San Francisco, Chicago and Abu Dhabi. Recently completed work includes Rowan, a 70-unit residential building in San Francisco with a concrete exoskeleton. He is currently serving as Project Manager for 950 Gough, a 95-unit residential building that includes the contemporary redesign of the historic St. Paulus Lutheran Church, which was destroyed by fire in 1995. As Project Architect for 1750 Broadway, Mr. Berglund is overseeing the design and construction of a 307-unit mixed-use condominium tower with extensive amenities in downtown Oakland.
Prior to joining Handel Architects, Mr. Berglund worked for Goettsch Partners, Inc. Five of his eight years with the firm were spent on location in Abu Dhabi where he was instrumental in the establishment of the firm’s Middle East operations and was responsible for day-to-day design, technical development, and construction observation on the Al Hilah Bank Tower and the 5-building, 3-million-square-foot, Abu Dhabi Global Market Square, which received the 2013 Best Tall Building Award, Middle East & Africa from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
Mr. Berglund is a licensed architect in California and Illinois. He is a member of the AIA and a LEED Accredited Professional. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Art and Design from San Francisco State University and Master of Architecture from Illinois Institute of Technology, Magna Cum Laude.
