We are honored that our work on Phase 1 of Essex Crossing - and that of many, many other great design firms - has been named a 2019 ULINY Award Winner!

The Urban Land Institute New York honored the Lower East Side development team for excellence in mixed-use development at a gala Thursday evening. Handel Architects' first building, The Essex, is one of four buildings included in Phase 1.

The Essex design draws inspiration from the surrounding neighborhood, specifically the tenement buildings with their multi-layered facades and window openings that vary in size and depth. The façade of The Essex reinterprets these formal aspects through modern materials and fabrication techniques. The asymmetrical, folded metal panel system reflects the sunlight in different ways and creates a varied pattern that was designed to capture natural light from multiple angles throughout the day and allow the folded bronze panels to glow.
