East Harlem ‘Passive House’ Apartment Complex is the Nation’s Biggest Ultra-Green Development Yet
The City
We believe that the creation of the spaces where people live their lives and raise their families is every bit as important as the creation of civic monuments and museums. Housing forms the bedrock of our communities and is the essential foundation of urban life.
It is a tremendous responsibility to create the spaces in which people live, raise a family, and grow old in. Our clients work with us because of our deep knowledge of this building type. Handel Architects has over 50,000 units built or under construction; we work at all scales in both the for-rent and for-sale markets. Our work ranges from affordable housing to luxury condominium projects and everything in between.
Our design approach encompasses a number of bedrock principles for value creation and successful multi-family residential design, including:

Residential Units
By leveraging a site's potential, we consistently create value for both our clients and for the neighborhoods in which we work. Handel Architects-designed multifamily projects sell and rent at the top of the market in cities around the world.
Units must be well-planned, efficient, and right-sized for the market. They need to be designed as much from the inside out as the outside in. We approach every project applying best practices for constructibility and durability, while seeking opportunities to innovate, and almost always within tight budget parameters.
Our firm has over twenty years of experience assessing the opportunities for affordable residential developments, and working with not-for-profit entities such as Habitat for Humanity. In New York City alone, we have over 8,000 units of affordable housing built or under construction.
Our student housing experience includes buildings for private campuses such as New York City's Cornell Tech campus, Columbia University, and Stanford, as well as public institutions such as the University of Toronto. Our intrinsic approach is to create spaces that are stress-reducing and nourishing for students while fostering academic achievement and providing space for off-line discourse.
Handel Architects is at the forefront of urban senior living. We understand how to optimize a senior housing program for high-rise construction, and we’re able to leverage our hospitality and interiors experience to create communities with vibrant communal spaces. We recently completed Gotham Point, which includes a 100-unit, 100% affordable senior component for Gotham & Riseboro Community Partnership; and Coterie Hudson Yards in New York City, which includes 126 units of assisted living residential units for Related Companies & Atria Senior Living.
Prior projects include Inspir Carnegie Hill in New York City, a 215-unit assisted living building for Maplewood Senior Living, and Coterie Cathedral Hill, a 209-unit assisted living building in San Francisco for Related Companies & Atria Senior Living.
