East Harlem ‘Passive House’ Apartment Complex is the Nation’s Biggest Ultra-Green Development Yet
The City
We believe that the creation of the spaces where people live their lives and raise their families is every bit as important as the creation of civic monuments and museums. Housing forms the bedrock of our communities and is the essential foundation of urban life.
It is a tremendous responsibility to create the spaces in which people live, raise a family, and grow old in. Our clients work with us because of our deep knowledge of this building type. Handel Architects has over 50,000 units built or under construction; we work at all scales in both the for-rent and for-sale markets. Our work ranges from affordable housing to luxury condominium projects and everything in between.

Residential Units
By leveraging a site's potential, we consistently create value for both our clients and for the neighborhoods in which we work. Handel Architects-designed multifamily projects sell and rent at the top of the market in cities around the world.
Units must be well-planned, efficient, and right-sized for the market. They need to be designed as much from the inside out as the outside in. We approach every project applying best practices for constructibility and durability, while seeking opportunities to innovate, and almost always within tight budget parameters.
Handel Architects has over twenty years of experience designing affordable residential projects, and working with not-for-profit entities. In New York City alone, we have over 8,000 units of affordable housing built or under construction.
Our student housing experience includes buildings for private campuses such as New York City's Cornell Tech campus, Columbia University, and Stanford, as well as public institutions such as the University of Toronto. Our approach to student housing is to create spaces that are stress-reducing and nourishing for the students while fostering academic achievement and providing space for off-line discourse. We emphasize health and wellness in our student housing, and have designed the largest Passive House student residences in the world.
Handel Architects is at the forefront of urban senior living. We understand how to optimize a senior housing program for high-rise construction, and we’re able to leverage our hospitality and interiors experience to create communities with vibrant communal spaces.
Our senior living projects ranges from 100% affordable projects like 145 Broome Street in New York City for Catholic Charities, to luxury projects like Inspir Carnegie Hill in New York City for Maplewood Senior Living, and Coterie Cathedral Hill, for Related Companies & Atria Senior Living in San Francisco.
