Lecture explored the importance of community in the design process.

Handel Architects Partner Michael Arad spoke to students and faculty at Georgia Tech last week, in a lecture titled “Building Community Through Commemoration.” Through the design of two particular projects, the National September 11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan and the Emanuel Nine Memorial in Charleston, SC, he explored how important community is in the process. “The very act of commemoration, especially in the public realm, is designed to build community, to carry forward a legacy, to allow us to remember collectively what happened, but also to build a shared understanding."
