1800 Avenue at Port Imperial
The fluid design of 1800 Avenue is inspired by the geometry of the riverfront site and the Hudson itself.
The Avenue Collection is a series of buildings located at the base of the Palisades, directly across the Hudson River from Midtown Manhattan. The neighborhood, called Port Imperial, is comprised of approximately 2.5 miles of waterfront residential and commercial development on the Hudson River, spanning the townships of Weehawken and West New York. The master plan consists of 2.8 million gross square feet of development and includes over 1,500 residential condominium units, 45,000 square feet of ground level retail and 1,600 parking spaces. Each self contained building has individual amenity programs, a pool with landscape roof deck, outdoor lounge, gym and business center. The larger development sites will have special amenities program of spa, yoga studios, media center and kid's rooms.
Handel Architects' third building, 1800 Avenue, is comprised of 282 high-end for sale units. The project also includes 20,000 sq. ft. of indoor amenities, including a residential lounge, indoor-outdoor pool, spa, fitness center, half basketball court, multi-media room, kids room, game room, library and co-working space. The outdoor amenities will include pool, dining and kitchen stations, sun deck, firepit and lounge seating.
The massing of the building has been broken down by splitting the site in two and creating a new pedestrian plaza between the two buildings. By stepping the buildings down to the waterfront, and articulating the corners and middle portions of the site, nine “pods” were created to further break down the scale. The river, the river’s edge and the site geometry inspired the façade design and materiality, the curved corners, the fluid metal banding of the pods, and the smooth glazing that separates them.
