Millennium Residences at Winthrop Center Interiors

Client MP Boston
Location Boston, Massachusetts
Project Type Interiors
Status Completed in 2023

The interiors approach at the Millennium Residences balances grandeur with moments of intimacy.

The Millennium Residences are located in the upper portion of Winthrop Center, a new luxury mixed-use residential building in Boston's Financial District. The project includes 317 for sale residences as well as a full suite of amenities including a club lounge with a concierge, bar, game room, terrace, and private dining room, an indoor pool, yoga and fitness studios, a screening room, a library, events spaces, and a pet spa with indoor greenspace.

The interiors approach draws inspiration from the strong Art Deco style found in much of the surrounding context. An emphasis on bold geometry, rhythmic repetition, and sharp angularity is paired with reference to the city's flourishing textile industry during the same era. Rich fabrics in jewel tones define and distinguish spaces, offering a soft contrast to geometrical forms and angular lines. This interplay of structured shapes and softer fabrics creates a dialogue between form and materiality, capturing both the precision of Art Deco and the tactile richness of Boston’s textile heritage.

Residents enter into a monumental lobby with double height ceilings.

Soaring ceilings pair with pleated walls, recessed lighting, and embossed wallpaper that seamlessly transitions to wood veneer, adding warmth and intimacy. The intricate flooring, a mosaic of light and medium-toned Imperador stone with Carrara marble in a cross-like pattern, subtly nods to Winthrop’s iconic "W." Low-profile furniture highlights the vertical expanse of the space.

The reception desk is composed of two offset volumes crafted from white Calacatta and green marble, juxtaposing clean geometric forms with rich materiality.

Above, a portal frames the desk, inviting visitors into a more intimate moment within the expansive space. The brushed steel screen, adorned with a nautical star pattern, features segments brushed in different directions, creating a subtle pinwheel effect of movement and depth. Overhead, a custom light fixture with 130 crystal prisms—clear, frosted, and gridded—reflects and refracts light, animating the lobby with a dynamic interplay of illumination.

Upstairs, the amenity spaces offer similar materiality in a darker palette.

The amenity concierge space is defined by a dark oak paneled wall with a routed pattern of contrasting angles. The floor is a silver travertine marble in a chevron pattern, while the reception desk is an emerald cut of marble. A light fixture of translucent marble spheres bathes the space in a gentle glow.
