Signal House at Ponce City Market
Signal House was built atop an existing parking garage and ties directly into Atlanta's Belt Line.
Signal House is a new 163-unit multifamily building, built atop an existing parking garage next-door to Atlanta's historic Ponce City Market. The building's main lobby is elevated and ties directly to Atlanta’s Belt Line, a 22-mile loop art and fitness path on a de-commissioned elevated industrial railway corridor. Signal House is the first of three buildings that Handel Architects has designed adjacent to the historic market, and will be followed by the mass timber office building 619 Ponce and a new 405-key hotel.
The existing 7-story parking garage was left in place and a new residential elevator core was poured to the north.
Additional columns in the garage were reinforced and new structural transfer beams were added above the existing roof. This allowed for large span amenity spaces and some double-height 'duplex style' apartments at the 8th floor, while transitioning to a more suitable and efficient residential grid above the transfer beams for the typical residential floors.
Signal House is sited and shaped to take advantage of views towards Downtown and Midtown Atlanta to the west and down the Belt Line to the east.
The serrated shape of the tower allows for views that extend past the building, while creating opportunities for outdoor space for most units. There is also a large grill and garden amenity on the high roof with views towards Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead.
The exterior of Signal House is composed of painted corrugated metal panels, with an anodized bronze window wall system.
A multi-story mural on the building's north face greets pedestrians and bicyclists along the Belt Line. Signal House is all-electric and LEED Silver.
Handel Architects also designed 619 Ponce, a mass-timber building on the other side of Ponce City Market.
