Location San Francisco, CA
Project Type Office & Workplace
Status Completed in 1999

The Sony Metreon creates multiple pedestrian “portals” into the site and frames Yerba Buena Gardens.

The Sony Metreon completes the southern edge of the Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade in downtown San Francisco. The building houses retail space and fifteen theaters, including a 600-seat I-MAX theater. The spaces are connected by centralized escalators and grand staircases funneling through the atrium space.

The project’s exterior is a combination of metal panels, colored spandrel glass, and a highly detailed curtain wall and skylight system 50 feet high. The structure is a steel moment frame built over an existing column-free ballroom below the street grade. The project integrated existing below-grade egresses from the Moscone Convention Center.
