The Bloc
The Bloc threads a new residential tower through an existing 1970's parking garage.
The Bloc is a new 53-story residential tower that will sit atop an existing parking garage in Downtown Los Angeles. The project will bring 466 new residences to the neighborhood while creatively cutting a notch into the existing structure and inserting new structure that is capable of supporting the tower.
The site is a popular open-air shopping center, anchored by a 32-story office building, a Sheraton Grand Hotel, and retail, in addition to the parking garage. The complex also has a link to the adjacent 7th Street/Metro Center subway station through its sunken courtyard, and residents will have direct access to the plaza that leads to the subway. The tower narrows as it threads through the existing parking structure, and this shaping gives it a distinctive flare as it rises above a massive outdoor amenity deck. Two new floors will be added to the garage, as well as indoor amenity space that will "pop-up" out of the top of the garage structure.
Above, the tower is defined by robust, curving balconies that wrap the facade. The balconies break at various places, revealing the residences behind and creating spectacular double-height outdoor spaces. The tower's distinctive top spirals upward, and will define the building on a skyline that is still primarily flat-top towers.
