3700 California is a new senior living community located in San Francisco’s Presidio Heights neighborhood. The project transforms the site of the former California Pacific Medical Center into a thoughtfully-scaled, multi-building development that includes memory care, assisted living, and independent living, integrating them into the neighborhood fabric.

Handel’s portion of the multi-block project adds 232 senior residences, all within a medical care facility, and includes a comprehensive suite of amenities. The design also preserves the historic 3-story 1939 Marshal Hale Building, which will house much of the memory care program, as well as portions of independent living and amenity spaces.

The building wraps around a central garden, offering residents access to nature and views, while a landscaped courtyard at the main entry reinforces a welcoming residential character. Below grade, two levels of parking support the building’s operations.

The architecture draws from the classical influences of the neighborhood, using materials that tie the structure to its neighbors. A palette of stucco, stone, and brick is complimented by traditional cornices and trim.

The project is targeting LEED Gold certification.
