The Ellery is a new 330-unit multifamily residential building located on a through-block site in Hell’s Kitchen and near the Theater District in New York City. The project is composed of both a high- and low-rise portion, which connect together via a collection of shared amenity spaces. On the southern portion of the site along West 42nd Street, a 33-story tower sits atop a retail podium. Above, the tower’s torqued vertical metal banding creates a sense of movement to the facade, and is in keeping with the look and feel of the buildings that define this busy street. On quieter West 43^rd Street, a new 7-story building embraces the neighboring punched window buildings through the use of masonry and horizontal banding. Here, the building’s main entrance is accessed through a monumental planted canopy; a metal screen is shaped to mimic the façade along West 42^nd Street, visually connecting the two towers.
