Sendero Verde wins a ULI New York Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing Development

We are proud to share that Sendero Verde has been honored with a ULI New York Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing Development.

Located in East Harlem, Sendero Verde is one of the most ambitious affordable housing projects in New York City’s recent history. As the largest Passive House residential building in the world, it combines deeply sustainable design with a robust mix of affordable housing, community-focused programming, and generous public green space. The project proves that large-scale affordable housing can be designed to meet the world’s most rigorous sustainability standards—without compromising on quality, comfort, or community.

The three-building, mixed-use development includes 709 affordable apartments—from studios to three-bedrooms—serving a broad range of income levels. At its center is a sprawling, multi-level courtyard that offers residents essential green space, tranquility, and a sense of retreat within the city. The project also incorporates essential community resources—including a school, community gardens, and social services—alongside local retail that activates the street level.

Congratulations to our clients and partners, including Jonathan Rose Companies, L+M Development Partners, Acacia Network, AECOM, Mitchell Giurgola, Steven Winter Associates, Desimone Consulting Engineers, Cosentini Associates, SOCOTEC, TPD | Architecture, Langan Engineering, and L+M Builders Group.

Great work from the Handel project team of Blake Middleton, Deborah Moelis, Louis Koehl, Ryan Lobello, Alex Kim, Diana Erazo, Kentaro Tsuboi, Meari Kim, Richard Karsten and Benjamin Novacinski!
